Hospitallers have a long history

Two monastic orders have used the moniker of “Hospitaller,” from the Middle French word hospitalier, for someone who hosts travelers and strangers. The Knights Hospitaller were originally formed in the 11th century to provide food and shelter for pilgrims out of a hospital in Jerusalem, but later became an armed military religious order. Later, in the 16th century, former soldier St John of God formed the Brothers Hospitallers to administer the hospitals he created in Spain.

The Hospitallers of St. Martin (HoSM) is an ecumenical monastic Community in the Episcopal tradition that focuses on Prayer, Hospitality, and Reconciliation for veterans and all those who have been affected by war, poverty, and violence. HoSM was founded by two priests - David Peters, an Episcopalian, and Lynne Smith-Henry, a Lutheran - originally as a sister ministry to the Episcopal Veterans Fellowship (EVF).
